Hardwood Lumber Drying and Wood Science

With over 40 years of hands-on experience in hardwood manufacturing and drying technology,
Sam is a seasoned wood technologist and retired Hardwood Dry Kiln Operator. His deep
expertise lies in understanding and managing the dynamic forces within wood—particularly the
intricate behavior of moisture as it exits and re-enters lumber.

Sam’s journey began with a personal project: restoring a 26-foot wooden cabin cruiser. That formative experience sparked a lifelong fascination with wood utilization, leading him to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University, followed by a Master of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering. During and after his studies, he contributed to multiple wood science research projects as a lab assistant at Penn State.

His professional career spanned decades in the hardwood lumber industry, starting in logistics and wholesale operations and progressing into leadership as a Drying Manager. There, Sam played a central role in launching and operating 24 hardwood kilns and overseeing the drying process across numerous remote facilities.

In 2023, Sam transitioned into consulting, where he continues to support businesses and professionals in optimizing hardwood drying processes. He brings a uniquely practical, science-informed approach to every challenge. “I still enjoy solving problems and helping others with the knowledge I’ve gained over the years,” Sam says. His work remains grounded in a profound respect for wood, both as a natural material and a sophisticated engineering challenge.
